Michigan Public Awareness:

Political Update: Attention Michigan Consumers, Realtors & Lenders

Did you know that Michigan has no licensing, registration, regulation or education requirements to be a home inspector in Michigan?

Michigan is one of only a few States that does not require regulation to be a Home Inspector. From 2004 thru 2006 REITI was in support with a local State Association for Home Inspectors on a proposed bill in Lansing for licensing home inspectors in Michigan.  However, the majority of the Government officials were not in favor of it and at this time there is still no regulation. Now that the application for that proposed bill has expired, the entire process has to start over from the beginning. This means that anyone, without the proper education and knowledge, can be a home inspector.

Fact: In the last decade, throughout Michigan, there have been multiple lawsuits filed by general consumers towards their Real Estate Agents, Brokers & Lenders for recommending unqualified & uneducated home inspectors.

Here is how you can reduce your liability:
Ask the home inspector the following key questions:

1.  Are you a member of a National Association of Home Inspectors    organization?
2.   How long have you been doing home inspections exclusively?
3.   What training or education background do you have?
4.   Are you FHA – VA – HUD approved through the Federal Department?
5.   Are you licensed in any of the residential industry areas?
6.   Are you a member of your local Real Estate Association?

Don't just take yes for an answer. Do your research; ask for proof and/or documentation that support the answers.
